Earlier this year, I started making homemade tooth powder after we ran out of natural toothpaste.
I’ve seen other recipes floating around the internet before, so I knew some common ingredients that go into tooth powder. I had many of these ingredients in my cupboard so I figured, why not try it?
All I can say is , WOW, I will never go back to regular toothpaste again, even natural toothpaste!
Tooth powder is so easy to make and it’s CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP.
I am always looking for ways to trim the fat off our budget so we can live a healthy and free life. Tooth powder aligns with that goal perfectly because I can make a four month supply for around $2.00.
I knew I wanted to include activated charcoal as one of the ingredients in my homemade tooth powder recipe.
Activated charcoal was the main ingredient in the natural toothpaste we used for years and I love how much it whitened our teeth. As a previous Crest White Strip user, I can honestly say both my husband and I have been able to enjoy not only the whitening benefits, but also the detoxification benefits of activated charcoal.
In this post I will share the remineralizing and whitening tooth powder recipe we have been using this past year, as well as the rationale for the ingredients I chose.

Can tooth powder really remineralize teeth?
Remineralization is a natural process where the body uses minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus to repair and restore the integrity of enamel. For anyone who doesn’t know, enamel is the outermost layer of the teeth that is very strong but not impenetrable.
Doing things like eating a diet high in sugar or not brushing/flossing daily can cause cavities because sugar sits in the mouth and ferments. Bacteria then feed off this sugar and produce acids which damages your enamel.
But eating sugar is not the only reason you may have a mouth full of cavities and fillings like I did.
Believe it or not, you actually have to eat for strong teeth. The more minerals and healthy fats in your diet, the better chance of maintaining healthy teeth. Even if you resolved to lay off the sugar, an overall diet depleted of nutrients will set you up for decay.
High mineral foods include free-range eggs, grass-fed meats, bone broth, and dark leafy greens. Put as much as you can in your tummy! Cod liver oil is a great fat supplement that promotes strong teeth.
Diet is even more important for healthy teeth when you are pregnant because you need twice as many minerals and fats.
But I’m off topic…
So can tooth powder really help with remineralization? Well, it did for me!
Tooth powder helps with remineralization by killing harmful pathogens, detoxifying the mouth, and topically providing a wide range of minerals.
I am one of those unlucky people because even though I don’t drink soda or eat sugary foods & brush and floss religiously, every year I would still have either a “watch spot” or a full blown cavity!
Last year I was already on my wellness journey, supplementing with cod liver oil daily, and drinking lots of bone broth every week yet I STILL had a “watch spot” on two of my teeth.
Six months after we fully committed to using tooth powder I went back to the dentist expecting to need a filling. Side note: I have pretty much had a filling or filling repair every year of my life since adolescence.
I was completely shocked when my dentist told me I didn’t need one! For me, homemade tooth powder made all the difference.
Tooth Powder Ingredients
Activated Charcoal: Activated charcoal has been used in the hospital for years as a treatment for poisoning because it is negatively charged and very porous, making it effective at binding toxins. It is very effective at whitening teeth, removing plaque, and helps to remove toxins from the mouth.
As a caution, do not use activated charcoal with kids because they could swallow it. It won’t poison them by any means, but it can upset their microbiome and absorb the nutrients from food.
Also as a caveat, you shouldn’t brush with activated charcoal everyday because it is abrasive and can cause tooth sensitivity. I didn’t know this for a while and didn’t personally have any issues but I wanted to warn you just in case.
Now we use activated charcoal tooth powder a few days a week and then this natural toothpaste alternatively.
Bentonite Clay: Bentonite clay is another detoxifying agent and has antibacterial properties. (source) It also has a wide array of minerals to add topically to your teeth including calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper, iron and potassium. (source)
Baking Soda: Naturally whitens teeth but keep in mind this ingredient may cause tooth sensitivity. If you have been sensitive to baking soda in the past, I would leave this ingredient out.
Cinnamon Essential Oil: I love using cinnamon essential oil in tooth powder because it is naturally antimicrobial, won’t interfere with homeopathy, and also helps freshen breath.
Clove Essential Oil: I also like to add clove essential oil to my homemade tooth powder because it is effective at reducing the bacteria that cause tooth decay and it also smells great! (source) Clove EO also does not interfere with homeopathy like peppermint EO does.
Stevia: This ingredient is purely to sweeten the tooth powder. I like mine only mildly sweet which is why I suggest only 3 spoonfuls, however if you want your tooth powder to be sweeter you can definitely add more!
Remineralizing & Whitening Tooth Powder Recipe
Grab a small mason jar to make and store your tooth powder inside. Place 1 tbs activated charcoal, 2 tbs bentonite clay, 1 tsp baking soda, 3 spoonfuls (or more for a sweeter powder) of stevia, and 4 drops of both clove and cinnamon essential oil in the jar and mix together thoroughly.
Brush your teeth 3-4 times a week with the tooth powder to help whitening teeth naturally. The easiest way to do this is to wet your toothbrush with water and then dip it in the powder. Tap off the excess.
This tooth powder lasts around 4-6 months.
We also take a daily supplement of homeopathic cell salts to restore any mineral imbalances in our body. This helps promote strong teeth!
Oral health is a huge part of your overall health and should be considered as a part of any wellness journey. So many chemicals are absorbed through mucus membranes and therefore it is so important to use a non-toxic toothpaste. I truly believe that taking cosmetic products into your own hands by knowing the ingredients is one of the most important steps toward a natural lifestyle.

Remineralizing Tooth Powder Recipe
- 2 tbs bentonite clay
- 1 tbs activated charcoal
- 1 tsp baking soda (omit if you have sensitive teeth)
- 3 small spoonfuls stevia Less than 1/8 tsp
- 4 drops clove essential oil
- 4 drops cinnamon essential oil
Add all ingredients to 4 oz mason jar and mix thoroughly.
To use tooth powder, wet your toothbrush with water and then dip it in the powder. Tap the excess on the jar and then brush your teeth as usual.
Use this tooth powder 3-4 times a week. For a sweeter tooth powder, add more stevia. For sensitive teeth, omit baking soda.
